Most corporate awards are from catalogs. You choose a shape, add an engraving, and send it out. That's not the Circular Wood Award. It begins with a piece of Sapele wood, a material that is not like crystal or metal. Each disk is unique with a different grain pattern so each trophy is unique. That variation is not a defect for partner recognition and long service awards. It's the whole point.

 

 

The design rationale.

The circle was not an arbitrary choice. A circle has no edges, no corners, and no beginning or end. This shape fits the message for awards that are about continuous relationships, not one-off achievement. It says "this partnership continues" in a way a star or column cannot.
The grain of the wood supports that idea. It's irregular, it's organic, it's unique to each piece. Crystal is predictable. Metal is metal anyway. Wood is not. In developed relationships, the wood grain feels more honest than a perfectly polished surface.
The bottom of the disk has a metal plate. This includes content that requires color or fine detail, such as logos, artwork, or small text. The wood is engraved directly on the surface with the main award title and year. The two materials are not in a competition. They're sharing the work around.

Most wood awards are flat plaques with printing on the top. This one is round, which changes how it reads from far away. The shape can be seen before the text is legible. The metal plate, gold or silver, is a contrasting touch against the warm brown of the Sapele wood. The plate is not an afterthought. It's a visual anchor in a strategic way.

There is a reason why we chose Sapele over other woods. The straight, parallel stripe grain pattern gives the disk a clean, organized look that works even with natural variation. It also has a reddish brown color, which looks good with either gold or silver plating.

 

 

How we maintain consistency


Wood is a natural material so each piece will vary from the next. Our job is not to get rid of that variation but to keep it within bounds that are acceptable. Each disk is hand selected for consistent grain direction and color. The engraving depth is fixed to a standard to make sure that text is readable on all parts." On each trophy the metal plate is in the same place. These steps don't make the trophies identical - that's not the point - but they make sure the differences are deliberate, not accidental.

Q: Why does the wood grain look different on each trophy?

A: Sapele wood is a natural material. Each disc is cut from a different part of the log, so the grain lines run in different directions. Some pieces have straight stripes. Others have curved or wavy patterns. This is not a manufacturing error. It's how wood works. If you need identical pieces, wood is not the right material. If you want each trophy to feel individual, this variation works in your favor.

Q: Can the metal plate be ordered separately from the wood disc?

A: The metal plate and wood disc are assembled as one piece. We don't supply them separately. The plate is attached to the wood during production and inspected as a single unit.

Q: What happens if the wood cracks or splits over time?

A: Sapele is a dense hardwood that resists cracking under normal indoor conditions. We kiln-dry the wood before production to stabilize moisture content. Avoid placing the trophy in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Under office conditions, the wood stays stable.

Q: Can we engrave on both the wood and the metal plate?

A: Yes. The wood surface carries the main text through laser engraving. The metal plate carries additional content through UV printing. The two surfaces serve different purposes - one for permanent text, one for color artwork and logos.

Q: How do we clean and maintain the wood surface?

A: Use a soft dry cloth. Avoid water, alcohol, or any cleaning solution. The wood has a clear coating that protects the surface, but moisture can still damage it over time. Dust it regularly and it will keep its appearance.
