Solid Glass Medal

In the awards industry, the word solid is often used loosely. It means just what it says right here. There is no hollow interior, no cavity, no secret deal. The entire piece is K9 crystal from one face to the other. This uniformity is important because it determines the way the light travels through the piece, how the weight is distributed, and the feel of the medal when being lifted.

At 1.2kg, the medal is a hefty one, but not so heavy that it's tricky to manage. The weight is the weight of the material and not from added ballast or a weighted base. People receiving can tell the difference. A solid crystal medal is not disposable, it is permanent.

Material & Light
K9 crystal has optical properties which are above the regular glass. It has a higher refractive index, so light bends more sharply as it passes through. This causes internal reflections which accounts for the crystal's characteristic brilliance. This medal's effect is enhanced by its solid construction, light enters one face of the medal, passes through 35cm of crystal and exits the other face with a visible depth.

The transparent finish yields full visibility through the piece, but the thickness blurs and distorts objects on the other side. This optical play gives the medal an active quality; it manifests itself differently at different angles and under different lighting conditions.

The faces are glossy as hell. Edges are beveled. Such details are important because they determine the relationship of the medal to its surroundings. A poorly polished crystal appears dull. A well-polished one throws light from the other side of the room.

Customization and Applications
Where a traditional flat plaque may feel lacking, this medal fits. This format has been very effectively used for awards of appreciation, service milestones, and corporate recognition programs. The size 20x30x35cm makes it visible without dominating the space it occupies.
